The Jiloty + Shipley Memorial Scholarship

Mike Jiloty

Mike Jiloty was a true professional and a true gentleman, and most would agree, a local legend in the advertising community.

Mike’s outstanding career began in the 1970s in marketing. He later managed an Orlando, FL advertising agency before opening his own firm locally in 1980: ‘Jiloty, Shipley & Associates’. The firm became ‘Jiloty Communications’ in 1986 and operated until 2002. At that time Mike became president of ‘Lord & Lasker/Florida’ in Ormond Beach. During his time in the Daytona Beach area, he and his team won hundreds of industry awards, including many Gold and Silver ADDY awards from the America Advertising Federation.

Mike was extremely active in community affairs and was also a Silver Medal recipient in 1983. His contribution to both the advertising community and his dedication to volunteer organizations made him a perfect candidate. Mike will always be remembered for his positive impact on our community, his kind spirit, his willingness to teach and lead, and his loyalty, generosity, and integrity. Both Mike and Jim Shipley were passionate about our local college students pursuing industry-related studies. For this reason, the AAF-Daytona Beach scholarship was renamed the “Jiloty + Shipley Memorial Scholarship” in their honor in 2022.

Along with all his accomplishments and roles, Mike was also a licensed pilot. Some of his best known words of encouragement when one was confronted with obstacles or challenges in life was an old aviation principle; “No matter what happens, just fly the plane.”

Jim Shipley

Jim Shipley was a creative director of extraordinary talent.

His work won more than 100 local, regional and national ADDY® Awards and was recognized by AAF Daytona Beach with the AAF Silver Medal in 1985.

Jim was an active community volunteer, especially in education – serving on the DSC Advisory Committee for Commercial and Advertising Arts. In 1996 Jim died suddenly. His death rocked the local advertising industry.

To recognize Jim’s professional accomplishments and his generous attitude toward mentoring students of graphic arts, a scholarship bearing his name was established.
